A Performance Clutch Won't Make Your Car Go Faster, but will make your money go faster !

I'm going to tell you the truth about many H/D and Performance grade clutches being sold today and about the
companies selling them. Most of these companies are really remanufacturers (clutch rebuilders) selling
remanufactured ( rebuilt / modified ) stock clutches . These clutch rebuilders are usually large
companies with a huge following. They are all found online and offline. Consumers usually purchase
these performance clutches from one of their distributors and in some cases directly from the remanufacturer.

They provide torque ratings that shouldn't be relied upon. If you ask for documentation to support their torque
ratings, you'll just get words, no proof.

Actual clutch manufacturers that stamp out covers and discs make their components to the vehicle manfacturers
specifications, so they know the true torque. They rarely provide torque ratings to the aftermarket. If
they do provide this information, it's almost always the minimum torque, not the maximum. How can clutch rebuilders
say as example 40% stronger than a stock clutch if they don't even know what the true torque rating is of a
particular stock clutch. They also don't tell you how they determine their torque ratings and that this higher torque
drastically shortens the life of the clutch.

How A New Clutch Works
In order to understand what these remanufacturers do, you have to understand how a clutch works. When you
install a new clutch, the torque capacity and clamp load increase gradually until the clutch reaches mid-life. Then the
torque capacity and clamp load start to decline and as the clutch wears, it eventually has to be replaced.

Let The Buyer Beware
Many big name companies call themselves manufacturers of H/D or Performance clutches. The truth
is, most are really remanufacturers (clutch rebuilders) of clutches. You know who these big companies are.
These rebuilt H/D or Performance clutches are usually painted a color like yellow, red, blue etc... and a
stock original quality clutch is usually a metal color. My theory on this is that these companies paint them to hide the
real manufacturers name.

These remanufacturers may change the lining on the disc to Carbon based material, Kevlar, Cerametallic etc... and
may change the hub or even make 2 discs out of one. They might work the presuure plate and may change the
springs, diaphram fingers and might move the pivot points to the maximum torque capacity & clamp load. At that
point, the clutch is at mid- life the day it's installed and the result is a very short life in service.

An inexpensive performance clutch might only be painted. Be careful !

Have you ever purchased a performance clutch that needed to be replaced to soon? Now you know why !

This information is what performance clutch remanufacturers don't want you to know. I won't name names because
of obvious reasons. You know who these companies are. Go to their web site and look for the painted clutches.

There is a need for these rebuilt H/D Performance Clutches
You have a vehicle with modifications in terms of increased horse power and torque, where a stock clutch won't
hold up and there isn't a new H/D clutch like LuK Pro Gold available for your application, you have no choice but
to install a rebuilt performance clutch.

Remember, modified stock clutches for Performance weren't originally designed to handle the increased
load. They may hold up to the increased torque, but only at the expense of the life of the clutch.

Do You Really Need a Stock Modified H/D or Performance Clutch ?
For most people, the answer is no. In fact, most people that purchase a stock modified H/D or Performance clutch,
really don't need one. Why spend big money on a stock modified clutch for Performance when you'll
have to replace it much sooner than a stock clutch ? If you're hard on your clutch and you want a H/D or
Performance clutch because you think the original stock clutch should have lasted longer, a stock modified clutch
isn't the answer. However, if you could get a new clutch with increased clamp load and torque capacity that were
originally manufacturered as a H/D clutch, that is your answer.
